The Best Places to Travel in 2019

(Original Post)

Another year is now upon us, and it’s finally time to get started on those New Year's travel resolutions. In 2019, the world is brimming with exciting events and new experiences. Whether it’s your year to relax and reflect, learn and experience, or simply to explore, there is somewhere in the world you can go; a destination waiting to enlighten you.

So take some of those savings out, run through that bucket list (prepare to add a few more places) and pack those bags. It’s the year to travel, to embrace adventure and indulge in culture. Whether you’re living large or on a budget, the world – as they say – is your oyster.

For some itinerary inspiration, here are some of the best destinations to visit in 2019.

Canterbury Region, New Zealand

Home to some of the world's most beautiful natural landscapes, Canterbury has been announced as 2019’s host location for Chapter 8 of GODZone, the world’s largest expedition-adventure race. New Zealand’s most untouched and visually stunning terrain will stage the seven-day international race from March 10 to 17, across the South Island’s alps-to-ocean Canterbury region.

This epic event gathers teams from all over the world and combines trekking, mountain biking, climbing and kayaking. An extravagant backdrop of huge mountains, grand rivers, big coastlines and powerful skies, all beautifully juxtaposed next to the South Island’s biggest city, Christchurch – the views are unparalleled.

And while you’re visiting, embark on your own Godzone adventure. Hike along New Zealand's iconic glaciers, or stargaze under the magnificent Canterbury sky. Take a stroll through the rugged land of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the scenes here will leave you stunned.

French Polynesia

Tahiti French Polynesia

French Polynesian freedom awaits you. The simplicity of life here means you can truly leave your troubles behind, and replace them instead with a swimsuit and a pair of sunglasses – you need nothing more! Tahiti and its sister islands make up more than a thousand marvellous miles of ocean. And in July 2019, a total solar eclipse will enchant the island even more.

This magical location, with skies undisturbed by city lights and bustling crowds, will provide an epic view of one of nature’s most dramatic phenomenon: a total solar eclipse. As a destination blessed simply by elements of earth, water and air, this island exudes serenity, introspection and peace – what better way to experience the spectacle!

The solar eclipse will pass directly over the Islands of Tuamotu Archipelago, completely darkening the sky for about three and a half minutes. Embrace this monumental occasion, and indulge in some well-earned rest and self-reflection while you’re there. French Polynesia might just provide the tranquil soul-searching journey you’ve been craving.

Bauhaus Trail, Germany

If you’re thirsty for knowledge and some unparalleled culture, Germany should be on top of your 2019 travel resolutions list. In 2019, the country will celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus – a school founded in Weimar, Germany to integrate and bring to life all art mediums: architecture, textiles, graphic design, product and furniture design, advertising, crafts and fine arts. The school's guiding principle was to honour the importance and relevance of design in all aspects of life.

To celebrate its 100 years, a massive collection of iconic art will be showcased at the new Bauhaus Museum in Dessau, opening in September. The festival events and celebrations will run nationwide, all throughout the year, and will celebrate all styles of art. These events will honour the enormous artistic energy and freedom of expression that was encouraged by the school upon its founding in 1919.

Germany is infused with history and culture. If you’re in need of some supreme cultural and artistic enlightenment, then a trip to Europe should inspire your itinerary – you’ll be swimming in invaluable knowledge and experience.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Skyline

In need of a luxury getaway? Welcome to Kuala Lumpur. The chaotic capital of Malaysia has undergone an evolution in the past few years. In addition to its glowing skyscrapers, colonial architecture and a myriad of natural attractions, the city’s hospitality game has risen – now rivalling those of Singapore and Hong Kong. If you’re en route to Malaysia’s paradisal islands, make more than just a pit stop in its emerging capital.

The city has developed some much-needed luxury hotels, including the city’s first Four Seasons (the third tallest hotel in the world), and in 2019 will welcome another epic building to its stunning skyline: Exchange 106, anticipated to be the tallest building in Southeast Asia. Alongside its elevated skyline, Kuala Lumpur has also upped its culinary game. Saint Pierre, a popular French restaurant from Singapore, now serves up contemporary French cuisine with Asian-inspired elements. So if you’re in the mood for some first-class opulent living, you know where to go.

If you’re travelling on a budget (Backpacker style), Kuala Lumpur will impress you no less! With some low-costing accommodation and a good view of the glimmering city, this trip will work for anyone. If you’re feeling a little lavish, you can treat yourself to an indulgent meal or a one night’s stay in one of the city’s grand hotels. There’s an option for all!

Minsk, Belarus

Minsk Belarus

For travellers hoping to veer off the beaten track, Belarus presents you with an obscure, underrated destination. Imbued with a quirky art scene, thriving cafe culture and friendly party-going locals, this country might be the change of pace you’ve been waiting for.

Minsk, the main hub, is home to the newly restored Old Town, where evening revellers indulge in fashionable cocktail bars and summer street parties. And in 2019, Minsk will host the European games! This will feature 200 events and 15 sports and will invite sports fanatics from all over the world to revel in all the competition and entertainment.

So if 2019 is your year to party, to indulge in some hardcore sport-viewing, or simply to explore a new destination, Minsk could be for you.

Wherever you are in the world, whatever your budget may be, there's a destination waiting to inspire you in 2019. Pack your bags and get lost!
