Can you drive around K’gari (Fraser Island) in a car?
Due to government regulations and safety restrictions, normal cars are not allowed on K’gari, but you can drive around the island in a 4WD instead. The inland roads and tracks are primarily made of sand, so while you wouldn’t get very far in a normal car, a 4WD is the perfect vehicle to get around in.
How much time do I need to explore K’gari (Fraser Island)?
We recommend at least three days on the island if you’d like to spend a decent amount of time exploring all the highlights. However, even if you’re a little more pressed for time, we believe it’s still worth the trip! Can I swim in the ocean around K’gari (Fraser Island)?
Swimming in the ocean off of K’gari’s East Coast is not recommended, as there are multiple hazards and no lifeguards on patrol. Not only do sharks regularly frequent these waters, but the area is also known for its strong rips capable of pulling even the strongest swimmers far from the shore.
However, if you’d like to swim while visiting the island, there are many other spots to choose from. K’gari has an abundance of freshwater lakes and creeks which are considered a much safer choice for a relaxing swim. You can also hop on a tour to the island’s West Coast for a supervised swim on the calmer side of the island.
