Uncover the secrets of Australia’s incredible Aboriginal culture and their unique connection to the environment on this fascinating day trip from Cairns to the beautiful Mossman Gorge in Daintree National Park. We start our action-packed day trip early, with pick up from Cairns at 7:30am. Settle back, relax and enjoy the scenic drive along the beautiful Queensland coast as we head past Port Douglas to the beautiful Cooya Beach.
Here we meet the amazing Kubirri Warra brothers who follow the traditions of their ancestors, the ancient Kuku Yalanji people. Their traditional fishing ground, the beautiful Cooya Beach has three incredibly diverse ecosystems- beach, mangroves and coastal reef- that are all interconnected by the ever changing mudflats and tidal lagoons. Discover the breathtaking scenery on an incredible two-hour coastal walk, where the brothers teach us how to throw spears and demonstrate how to hunt for fish, mud crabs and mussels. Learn about bush tucker and traditional medicines as we walk through the lush jungle, before we cook up our delicious catch over the fire and enjoy home-made damper (Australian bread).
After a well-deserved rest, we drive onto the beautiful Mossman Gorge, where we are welcomed with a traditional ‘smoking’ ceremony, conducted by local Aboriginal people with a unique cultural knowledge. This amazing once-in-a-lifetime ceremony is the perfect introduction to the Kuku Yalanji people’s way of life and will protect you on your visit to their ancestral home.
This afternoon, we visit the amazing Mossman Gorge Centre, where we enjoy a fantastic lunch infused with delicious local flavours at the Mayi Cafe. The specially designed menu features locally sourced produce combined with tasty bush ingredients for a mouthwatering culinary experience! There is also time to explore the fascinating gallery, which is full of artworks from prominent and up-and-coming local artists.
After lunch, we head out into the bush for the highlight of this amazing day tour, the incredible Ngadiku Indigenous guided Dreamtime walk. Our amazing Aboriginal guides will take you an unforgettable journey into the rainforest and share unbelievable stories and legends from the past. Learn about traditional plant use, identify edible bush foods and uncover the secrets of making bush soaps and ochre paint on this unmissable guided tour of the jungle.
This beautiful walk takes us deep into the rainforest, along private trails and past ancient traditional humpies (huts), as our friendly local guides provide an enchanting narrative of the lush monsoonal forest and a unique insight into their ancient symbiotic relationship with this unique tropical environment. Take a break and cool off with a swim in a pristine swimming hole in the jungle and snap a few last photos of the beautiful Queensland rainforest before we head back to Cairns.
