Why do we love this

We love that this trip lets you see so much of the Red Centre! 6 days of exploring means you can take your time and make the most of your desert trip.

Discover the best of the Australian Outback starting from Adelaide! Journey through the scenic Adelaide hills towards the Flinders Ranges and Coober Pedy before stopping in Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon for the ultimate outback experience

Day 1 - Clare Valley, Flinders Ranges, Mount Remarkable National Park, Alligator Gorge, Quorn (Lunch, Dinner)

Your trip commences with a scenic drive through one of Australia’s oldest wine regions – the Clare Valley.

Next, it's time to make your way to the rugged Outback via the historic town of Melrose. This ancient town is the gateway to the Flinders Ranges, the largest mountain range in South Australia, as well as Mount Remarkable National Park, famed for its diverse wildlife, dramatic gorges and walking trails. You will start by taking a leisurely stroll through Alligator Gorge (2 hours, 8.9km), which is abundant with wildflowers and native orchids through spring.

Then, head to Quorn, where you’ll be able to explore the town or take a dip in the swimming pool before settling in your dormitory style accommodation for the night.

Driving time: 3-4 hours

Day 2 - Coober Pedy, Opal Mining Museum, Josephine's Kangaroo Orphanage (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Observe the beautiful changing landscapes scattered with road trains and wildlife as you make your way to Coober Pedy – the Opal Capital of the World. You’ll have time to explore this fascinating town both above and below the ground - a tour of the underground Opal Mining Museum will inform you about the history of Coober Pedy, and you’ll learn about the local indigenous people at the Aboriginal Interpretive Centre.

Browse the beautiful Opals at one of the many opal shops in the town centre, or try the traditional process of fossicking or ‘noodling’ for opals.

Next, you’ll have the opportunity to visit Josephine’s Kangaroo Orphanage – where you’ll meet Kangaroos and baby joeys that have been rescued and rehabilitated, a highlight of the trip for many. You’ll sleep like a local tonight, in an underground bunkhouse style dormitory.

Driving time: 7 hours

Day 3 - Uluru (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

The majority of today will be spent on the road as you make your way up the Stuart Highway towards Uluru. There’ll be plenty of pit-stops along the way, allowing you to stretch your legs, grab a bite to eat and take pictures of the stunning scenery.

You won’t believe your eyes as the first site of the rock comes into view. Once you arrive in Uluru, you will quickly set up camp in time for your first awe-inspiring Uluru sunset, where you’ll marvel at the majesty and beauty of the place.

Driving time: 10 hours

Day 4 - Kata Tjuta (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today commences with a trip to the Uluru KataTjuta Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where you’ll learn about the region’s indigenous history. You’ll then take an easy walk around the base of Uluru (2-3 hours, 10km), trekking through woodlands dense in acacia and grassy clay pans and wildlife gathered around waterholes.

Marvel at the geological wonders of the Rock while learning more about Aboriginal interpretations from your local and culturally accredited guide. Enjoy your evening experiencing another beautiful Uluru sunset and relax back at your campground.

Driving time: 3 hours

Day 5 - Kata Tjuta, Valley of the Winds, King's Canyon (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Wake up to a stunning sunrise over Uluru while devouring another scrumptious breakfast. Today you will hike to the lookouts around Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and experience the extraordinary views and ancient rock formations of the majestic Valley of the Winds.

The hikes can be challenging with steep sections and an average length of about 3 hours 30 minutes (7km); however, once you reach the peak, you’ll thank yourself for pushing through. After you’ve completed your hike, you’ll hit the road in search of Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon), where you’ll camp for the night.

Driving time: approx 1 hour

Day 6 - Watarrka National Park, Canyon Rim Walk, Garden of Eden (Breakfast, Lunch)

Your last day will be spent exploring the Watarrka National Park where you’ll have the opportunity to stop and marvel at the massive sandstone walls of the Kings Canyon, with its stunning gorges and vast canyon floor.

A must do is the Canyon Rim Walk, which takes around 3-4 hours (approximately 6km) and descends into the ‘Garden of Eden’, a beautiful green oasis. Your guide will inform you about local Aboriginal Culture, followed by a lunch stop before journeying back to Alice Springs at approximately 6:30 pm.

The maximum luggage allowed is 1 bag (max 20kg) plus a day pack (to take on board the bus for your camera, water bottle, sunscreen etc.) on any of our tours except the Kangaroo Island tours where passengers are requested to bring only a small bag, however this is usually not a problem as it returns to Adelaide and most hostels are happy to hold extra luggage in safe keeping for the short 2-day duration. All our tours apart from the Barossa Valley day tour carry secure trailers with the bus for luggage storage.

In the summer it is warm at night but in winter, temperatures can drop to around 0 degrees Celsius. As you will be sleeping outside in winter, you will need a sleeping bag inside of your swag with a rating of at least -4 degrees Celsius. We have excellent quality sleeping bags for hire that are rated to -10C. A beanie on the top of your head helps keep you warm during the desert winter nights.
