Fiordland - Things to do

Fiordland is a large national park in New Zealand’s South Island. This mountainous reserve measures a whopping 12,000 square kilometres and has deep fjords, that are carved out by ancient glacial forces.

The best time to visit Fiordland National Park is the summer season, from December to February. This time, walking tracks such as the magnificent Kepler Track, Routeburn Track and Milford Track are accessible, and all the other outdoor activities in Fiordland are much more enjoyable. But autumn with its vibrant colours and the winter that brings enchanting white landscapes are also excellent times to travel down south.

Doubtful Sound is one of Fiordland’s most staggering fjords. This sea arm is connected to the Tasman Sea and has heaps of wild animals to observe, like seals and dolphins. You can enjoy a relaxing Doubtful Sound cruise that departs from Te Anau or go on a similar trip which starts at Manapouri.

If you want to see this vast fjord in silence and be connected with the elements, you can also opt for a Doubtful Sound kayak tour. This way, you can discover small coves along the way and paddle independently between the towering mountains of New Zealand’s second most popular fjord. A must-do experience in Fiordland!

Fiordland is also home to the country’s most famous and most visited fjord: Milford Sound. During a scenic cruise through Milford Sound, you get an impression of the grand fjord, and you’ll even reach the Tasman Sea at the end of the fjord. Meanwhile, you might spot dolphins or sunbathing fur seals on the rocks. The captain will ensure you’ll get soaked under one of the waterfalls, so be prepared!

With kayaking in Milford Sound you meander through narrow creeks, see the grand proportions of Milford Sound and catch glimpse of native birds and other wildlife!

To have a complete picture of what this untouched region of New Zealand has to offer, fasten your seatbelts and hop on the Milford Sound and Glacier tour with Fly, Cruise, Kayak & Fly. This magical journey provides you with aerial views of Fiordland National Park and its glaciers and a kayak trip to Harrisons Cove.
