What to Expect
The young and young-at-heart will both love this easy and family-friendly bike tour alongside the Hawea River, taking in some of Wanaka's most scenic beauty.
Your professional Wanaka bike guide takes the hassle out of organising a family bike tour, supplies all the equipment and has bikes & helmets to fit all adults and children. They also bring refreshments and look after transport to and from the trail.
Meandering alongside one of Wanaka’s well-known rivers, there’s plenty to see and do. This tour passes by a standing wave where you might see people kayaking or river surfing.
The crystal clear water also showcases the local trout population, and at the end, you'll cross a spectacular swing bridge that spans the river.
The trail is wide and well maintained, and you only cycle in one direction, which is mainly downhill with a gentle gradient. Whether you’re 7 or 70, this is a bike tour you can do.

This trail is rated a grade 2, meaning it's suitable for beginners – you have biked a few times before, or you are a cautious novice who can ride on smooth terrain such as asphalt.
The Operator has bikes to fit everyone – from the very tall to the very small (including children!) They also have trailers, bike seats and tag-a-longs for very junior guests.
The Operator recommends comfortable activewear for the bike tours – shorts, tee shirt, jacket/warm top and sturdy lace-up shoes. Long or baggy clothing may get caught up in bike wheels. Weather-appropriate clothing is suitable for all other tours.
Please ensure you bring a warm top or jacket and sunglasses too. A day bag, camera and own water are also recommended.
This varies depending on the tour you choose. For the Riverside tour, The Operator uses modern, front suspension mountain bikes. For more technical tours such as Dingleburn, they use modern, full-suspension mountain bikes.
If you fall off your bike, your guide will check to see that you are OK. If you are injured, they'll provide first aid; if serious enough, alert the appropriate authorities.
If you don't want to continue the trip, it will be your guide's decision whether or not you can leave the trip.
