Why do we love this

We love that this tour shows you a different side of Queenstown. How often do you get to experience a working farm AND take a scenic cruise in the same day?

WHAT TO EXPECT

Discover the beauty of Queenstown's Lake Wakatipu, experience farm life at Mt Nicholas High Country Farm and delve into NZ high country on a 4WD adventure!

Your day starts with a scenic cruise across Lake Wakatipu, toward Mount Nicholas. Enjoy stunning views of the mountains as you approach and learn about the area with commentary from your skipper. Explore the hidden wonders of Lake Wakatipu as you cruise around the crystal clear waters of Frankton Arm, explore the base of Cecil Peak, and stop at the sacred waters of Bob's Cove to view the lush flora and fauna up close.

Discover hidden waterfalls and islands and sip the crisp, refreshing water from the lake. The boat has large, viewing windows and comfortable indoor seating which offer panoramic views of the lake and the spectacular Southern Alps.

After making the most of the views, stop at Mount Nicholas High Country Farm to dive headfirst into real, working farm life! This is an authentic, family-run, high country merino sheep farm located in one of New Zealand's most rugged and remote mountain locations. The farm is the producer of the highest quality wool for the world-renowned clothing company 'Icebreaker'. Get behind-the-scenes access to this country farm and soak in the surrounding views.

You'll get to enjoy a guided tour of the farm and follow the journey of merino wool from start to finish. It's a fun, interactive and hands-on environment - from the mustering of the sheep through to the creation of the Icebreaker clothing. Learn all about daily farm life, watch as the sheep are herded by sheepdogs and meet the other breeds of working animals used on the farm.

Afterwards, journey deep into the heart of New Zealand's high country in a 4WD
and watch the dramatic New Zealand landscape unfold around you. A classic Farmers Platter Lunch is provided today along with tea and coffee.

Departures:  9.00am (1 Nov – 30 Apr) and 11.00am and 1.00pm (year round).

Mt Nicholas is home to 29,000 merino sheep set on 100,000 acres of breathtaking terrain – an extraordinary landscape surrounded by mountains, thousands of glaciers, ice-carved fiords, forests, alpine lakes and vast snowfields.

The farm is one of a handful of family-owned high country stations on Lake Wakatipu, and supplies wool exclusively to the world-renowned Icebreaker clothing company.

Merino wool comes off the back of one of the world’s toughest animals which has learned to thrive in this extreme environment. Most breeds of sheep struggle to survive in this rugged high country, but these extraordinary animals grow a fleece that is luxuriously soft, yet strong enough to cope with anything nature throws at it. Their high-tech coat of exceptionally fine wool is light and breathable in summer, and highly insulating in winter.

That means they can survive temperatures that can soar to 35-degrees in summer or plummet to minus 20-degrees in winter, when mountains are blanketed deep in snow.
