What to Expect

Join this 6 Day 4WD Central Australia adventure tour for the ultimate Outback experience to Uluru and often missed Red Centre highlights. This tour offers an authentic outback adventure travelling with a small group in a purpose-built four-wheel drive vehicle, escorted by two professional guides.

As well as enjoying the wonders of Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and Watarrka (Kings Canyon), and the West Macdonnell ranges, the tour provides the opportunity to experience the desert driving on dirt roads. Avoid the crowds by staying at remote private bush camps where you will sleep under the clearest southern stars you can imagine in a traditional swag and comfortable permanent safari tent complete with beds, pillows, and all linen. This is a journey into the heart of the Red Centre.

Day 1: Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Cultural Centre and Uluru sunset

For those electing to start in Alice Springs, you will be collected from your accommodation (or nearest pickup point) for the drive to one of Australia’s most famous icons – Uluru. Guests starting at Ayers Rock Resort will join the group and then travel the short distance to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

The afternoon is dedicated to exploring this extraordinary monolith starting with an interpretive walk led by your guide, who will explain the Aboriginal law and religion (Tjukurpa). You will also learn about the art and culture of the local custodians, the Anangu people, and visit the acclaimed Cultural Centre where you can explore the displays and learn of the flora and fauna unique to this area.

Experience the famous changing colours of Uluru at sunset complete with sparkling wine and nibbles and plenty of photo opportunities. This is a great time to kick back and contemplate the vastness of the desert while getting to know your fellow travellers.

Afterward, you'll have time to settle in at the private camp, complete with a dining experience before retiring to your swag under the amazing night sky or your comfortable safari tent complete with beds. Dinner included on day 1.

Day 2: Uluru and Kata Tjuta Sunrise, Kata Tjuta walks, Kings Creek Station bush camp

Rising early, take a short walk to a lookout close to the campsite to view sunrise over Uluru and Kata Tjuta without the hustle and bustle of the public viewing areas before heading off to Kata Tjuta for a walk through the spectacular "Valley of the Winds".

Afterward, the tour goes to Kings Creek Cattle Station for the second nights' remote private bush camp, complete with flushing bush toilets and hot showers. With nobody else for miles, this camp has stunning views out over the George Gill Ranges and gives you a real feel for the outback. Dinner around the campfire makes for a very social time with another night out under the stars. Tonight, listen for the sound of dingoes howling in the distance while watching the desert sky light up above you. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included on day 2.

Day 3: Watarrka (Kings Canyon) National Park, Tylers Pass, remote private bush camp

The tour heads off to Watarrka (Kings Canyon) for a mind-blowing 6km walk through the towering walls, crevices, and plateaus of Watarrka. The tour visits the Amphitheatre, Lost City, and the tranquil ‘Garden of Eden’.

Afterward, the tour travels a short distance to the next stop to enjoy a well-earned lunch followed by a scenic four-wheel drive to Tyler’s Pass, which presents majestic 360-degree views of this stunning landscape. From here you will see views of Tnorala (Gosses Bluff crater) a sacred site that scientists believe to be the remnants of an object from space believed to be a comet, that crashed to earth around 142.5 million years ago. Tyler’s Pass on the famous Mereenie Loop road presents a great opportunity to spot native wildlife amongst amazing scenery.

The tour ends the afternoon at our remote bush camp in the Western MacDonnell Ranges. Sleep under the clearest skies with no light pollution. You will think that you can almost touch the stars. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included on day 3.

Day 4: West MacDonnell Ranges, including Mt Sonder Lookout, Ormiston Gorge, Ellery Creek Big Hole, and the Ochre Pits

While having breakfast, you'll view the sunrise from camp and then head off to amazing views from Mt Sonder lookout, then it’s on to Ormiston Gorge to hike the Ghost Gum Walk followed by a swim in the rock hole. Heading further east along the ranges, the tour visits the Ochre Pits, a registered sacred site still used by traditional owners for its Ochre deposits.

The tour also visits Ellery Creek Big Hole, one of the West MacDonnell Ranges' most picturesque swimming and walking spots known to the locals as Udepata. After lunch, the tour drives to Owen Springs Reserve and 4WD onto Redbank Waterhole bush camp, collecting firewood along the way to keep you warm in our most remote camp of the trip. Enjoy dinner and stargazing around the campfire. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included on day 4.

Day 5: Camel Farm, Indigenous Cultural Experience and overnight camp at Yulara

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before making your way to Uluru, stopping en-route at the Outback Camel Farm. Here, the tour sees how these amazing ships of the desert are so critical to the fabric of the red centre, as the oldest form of transport.

Next stop is to enjoy a well-earned lunch followed by the opportunity to immerse yourself in an authentic indigenous cultural experience. Enjoy a leisurely guided walk with indigenous custodians while learning about bush tucker and the healing powers of bush medicine, we also gain an insight into Aboriginal dot paintings.

The tour heads to Uluru for our final night in the outback. Viewing Atila along the way and stopping at Curtin Springs cattle station for a comfort stop, you’ll arrive at dusk at our comfortable camp for a nice hot shower. Due to the short winter days, viewing sunset on Uluru is not achievable this evening. Settle in for the last dinner together around the campfire and marvel again at some of the clearest skies you can imagine.

Day 6; Sunrise view of Uluru, depart Ayers Rock Resort or continue to Alice Springs

Enjoy your final breakfast in the Outback and witness sunrise over Uluru before a quick trip into the resort township. Here you will have free time to explore some of the resort facilities before boarding the airport shuttle to meet your outgoing flight or remain on the vehicle for those wishing to travel back to Alice Springs.

You will arrive in Alice Springs at approximately 4.00 pm. Accommodation is not included this night. If you are staying an extra night at Ayers Rock Resort, you may wish to participate in a range of free activities from Museum Tours to Bush Yarns.
