WHAT TO EXPECT

Unlike some other companies who break up their longer tours with different guides and groups halfway through your tour, We don't. One guide, one group gives you the best experience possible. Make friends. Make memories. Our biggest and best tour, spending a whole week exploring the depths of the Highlands and the West Coast. It's a week that'll involve hiking, beaches, castles, heroes, battles, old stuff, new stuff, islands, more islands, ferries, sunsets, boots, bikinis, jackets, and the traditional sunblock. We'll be staying right on the shores of Loch Ness, beautiful Skye, Oban the gateway to the isles and you'll also get 2 nights in a traditional Black House when we venture way out west to explore the delights of Lewis and Harris.

Day 1: Pitlochry

Passing the iconic Forth Bridge, our first day takes us up the spine of Scotland, taking in forests, tales of clan rebellions, visiting sites of ancient battles an amazing introduction to the majesty of the Highlands. We then go in search of Nessie, the legendary monster that lurks beneath the deep waters of Loch Ness. Our hostel for the night is situated right on the shores of the loch with stunning views across the water. This the only hostel in the world that can offer this unrivaled setting.

  • Pitlochry
  • Killiecrankie
  • Clava cairns
  • Culloden
  • Sleep on the shores of Loch Ness

Day 2: Ullapool

To Ullapool and the ferry to Stornoway; the delights of Lewis and Harris will materialize into view and where we’ll be staying for the next 2 nights in a traditional Black House Village. This should give us ample time to explore beaches and brochs, mountains and machair, hear of MacLeod and Morrisons, and best of all, to visit the Calanais Standing Stones.

  • Ullapool
  • Stornoway
  • Butt of Lewis
  • Calanais Standing Stones
  • Gearrannan Blackhouse Village

Day 3: Dun Carloway Broch

Starting from where we left off from the day before we spend the day exploring the incredible sights and vistas of these magical islands taking our time and making sure we are not rushed.

  • Dun Carloway Broch
  • Great Berneray
  • Golden White Sandy Beaches
  • Plenty of time to enjoy the sights

Day 4: Tarbert

Leaving the Outer Hebrides by ferry, it’s time to join in on the chorus of Over the Sea to Skye, where we’ll hike on one of the majestic hills of the Trotternish Ridge; visit the colourful harbour of the Capital Portree; hear tales of Warrior Queens and search for the secret of eternal youth and bask in the beauty of the Misty Isle.

  • Tarbert
  • Uig
  • Quiraing
  • Kilt Rock
  • Portree
  • Cuillin Ridge
  • Kyleakin

Day 5: Mallaig

It may be farewell to Skye but not the West, as we float back to the mainland; passing more blazing white sandy beaches to Glenfinnan with its viaduct and Jacobites; taking in more awe-inspiring mountains (including Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest) and hike in hauntingly beautiful Glencoe; before cruising along the spectacular coastline of Loch Linnhe to take shelter in Oban & it’s picturesque bay.

  • Mallaig
  • Morar Sands
  • Glenfinnan Monument & Viaduct
  • Glen Nevis

Day 6

A free day to explore Oban, the Gateway to the Isles. Day 7: Glen Lonan: Hairy Coo Safari

We’ll start the day with a quest for Vinicius caledonicus a hairy coo safari like no other, continuing to Loch Awe with its Campbell castles & hollow mountain, Cruachan; on towards Rob Roy MacGregor’s last home, with a jaw-dropping view at the end of an easy, if steep walk and for our final flourish we’ll visit Doune Castle on the way back to Edinburgh.

It is important to come prepared for what we get up to on tour. We like to get out and about and get in about nature, and you need the right gear to do that - a flipflops won't see you through a hike.

 Therefore, we recommend:

  • Sturdy walking boots or trail shoes from a reputable brand
    • A good pair of walking shoes is the difference between a nice relaxing hike and being hugely uncomfortable - Nobody likes blisters and twisted ankles.
  • A lightweight waterproof outer layer
    • Scotland's weather can be changeable, and when clouds get trapped in the mountains that means rain. We recommend a shell-type waterproof outer layer for keeping the rain out that can be worn over your existing attire. Remember: Water resistant is not the same as waterproof.
  • Cold weather clothing
    • Nobody wants sniffles so be prepared to wrap up warm, especially in the winter months. It will be cold - This can be as simple as a hoodie or sweater.
  • A small backpack
    • Ideally, with a waterproof lining or cover, this is for your daily adventures with enough room for the essentials like food, water, cameras, medicine, waterproofs, dry socks, warm gear, etc.
  • Spending money
    • Be it whiskey, food or souvenirs for people back home: you'll need spending money. When you go to your local Bureau de Change you may be issued with 'Bank of England' notes - Don't worry, these are perfectly acceptable.
  • An open mind
    • Travelling is all about seeing new places, meeting new people and trying new things - Make the most of it.

We design our tours for 18 to 40-year-olds. In the main, people are traveling on their own and are looking to meet new people and have fun on their trip. At most there are only ever 29 people on the bus and we do our very best to ensure that everyone enjoys the tour.

Our fleet of modern Mercedes Benz and MAN 16-29 seat mini-coaches have everything you would expect; heating, air conditioning, reclining seats, seat belts and plenty of Scottish music! They are safe and modern and are low emission Euro 5/6 compliant. Please note there are no toilet facilities on the coaches, though we do make frequent restroom stops.

The buses are small so that we can take you to the places that the big coaches can’t go. This means the storage is reduced too and so we would ask that you just bring what you need for the trip. If you have really big bags or large suitcases and you are staying at one of our 3 Edinburgh hostels before your tour then please ask the staff if you can leave it in the luggage store until you get back. If you are not staying in one of our hostels then please arrive slightly earlier for your tour and ask the staff in the hostel you depart from to keep it in the luggage store for you.
