This trip takes you to a couple of South Australia and Victoria's most iconic destinations - the stunning Kangaroo Island and the Great Ocean Road! You'll see a heap of native animals like koalas and sea lions along the way, and you'll even get the chance to sand board the dunes of the Little Sahara, and see the famous Twelve Apostles. This journey is the perfect snapshot of what makes Australia so great.

Day 1: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island (lunch, dinner)
Adelaide’s one of those cities that has a little bit of something for everyone: award-winning gardens, 19th century churches, fresh seafood and incredible wines.

You’ve got an early start this morning from the Adelaide Central Bus Station (meet at the SeaLink desk at 6.15am for a 6.45am departure).

Travel along the picture-perfect Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis where you'll catch the 45-minute SeaLink ferry to Penneshaw. While crossing the water, make sure to look out over the side of the boat - it’s not unusual to be joined by a few dolphins!

After a stunning journey, you'll touch down on the island and head off your first stop at Rob's Shearing and Sheepdogs. Here you'll see a very Aussie occupation firsthand. You'll learn about sheep shearing and see the workers in action!

Next, continue on to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, the only commercial distillery of eucalyptus oil in South Australia.

Then, next up is the Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you’ll have the chance to see rare Australian Sea-lions up close in a wild breeding colony. These gorgeous animals are bound to amaze you.

Later, it's time to head from the sea to the desert. You're off to the white sand dunes of the Little Sahara! Give sandboarding a shot and enjoy a serious adrenaline rush.

Afterwards, head to your exclusive accommodation in Vivonne Bay Lodge, your home for the night. You’ll then have a spot of free time to kayak on the Harriet River, take a walk along one of the property’s tracks, hop on a bike or jump in for a swim at Vivonne Bay Beach.

You’ll spend the night in eight-person dormitory rooms with shared bathrooms (bed linen provided).

Day 2: Kangaroo Island to Adelaide (breakfast, lunch)
After breakfast, pop into the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and search for koalas lazing in the eucalyptus trees. These furry critters can be quite hard to spot!

Next up it’s off Flinders Chase National Park, where you’ll find the Remarkable Rocks, a group of giant weathered stones that guard the view over Kirkpatrick Point. This collection of boulders really live up to their name, and they're worth a photo or two. Luckily, you’ll arrive ahead of the crowds, so getting the perfecy snap is easy! Explore the National Park and enjoy rambling across the rocky coastline, stopping to admire the seascapes.

Then, stop in at Admirals Arch on Cape Du Couedic to see the resident fur seals frolicking in the ocean or basking on the rocks.

Next, you'll head off to Penneshaw, with a few stops along the way, depending on the time and weather. Once you arrive, you can purchase dinner (own expense) before catching the ferry back to Adelaide.

You'll be dropped at the Adelaide Central Bus Station, a short walk to the Adelaide Central YHA where you will be staying this tonight.

Please note: Driving time while on the Island will be the majority of the day, with constant stops for sightseeing. The ferry journey is approximately 45 minutes back to the mainland with a journey of 1.5 hours back to central Adelaide. Arrival time will be approximately 10.40 pm. Walking distances are several hundred metres at each location.

Day 3: Adelaide to The Grampians (dinner)
This morning you'll be picked up at the YHA Adelaide (135 Waymouth Street) at 7.00 am.

Leaving South Australia behind, drive across the state border into Victoria and enter the Grampians. Here, you can embark on a walk to view the Jaws of Death/The Balconies, a rocky lookout that will blow your mind! You can also hike down to McKenzie Falls and take in the incredible views from Reeds Lookout.

Later, gain an insight into the customs of the land's traditional owners with a stop-in at the Brambuck Cultural Centre. You'll then head into the heart of the Grampians, stopping en route for lunch.

The last stop of the day will be a spot in the Grampians National Park where kangaroos, wallabies and koalas are often spotted.

Tonight's accommodation is at either Brambuk Backpackers or the Grampians YHA.

Day 4: The Grampians to Melbourne (breakfast)
After another early morning start, begin the journey along Australia's glorious Great Ocean Road. This twisting highway brings another photo-worthy view with every turn.

Explore Port Campbell National Park, and rock out with the amazing rock formations of London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge and the iconic Twelve Apostles.

Later, sit back and soak up the mesmerising coastal views on the way to Apollo Bay, where you'll stop for lunch.

Then, pull over at Kennett River for the chance to spot koalas! As you make your way into Melbourne, you'll also pass through charming beach towns like Lorne where you can take some snaps at famed surf locations.

Consider bringing your own water bottle to refill along the way. We recommend at least a 1.5litre capacity. The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in bottles, the production of a 1-litre plastic bottle takes 2 litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large proportion ends up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments.

Winter (June, July, August) night time temperatures in the south of the country can reach below zero. Please ensure you pack appropriately. Warm jacket, thermals, a woollen hat is advisable for the colder months. You may also need to pack waterproof trousers and a jacket.
