Wander through the natural bush setting and explore the huge volcanic craters, sinter terrace formations and steaming vents. Be wowed by the coloured hot and cold water springs which include the world famous Champagne Pool. There's so much to explore here.
The Geothermal Area is where the magic lies below the surface. Discover a uniquely different natural landscape and marvel at the most extensive geothermal systems in New Zealand.
A series of clearly marked walking tracks around the area provide you with the opportunity to really explore. Choose from walks between 30 to 75 minutes and discover unique volcanic vistas around every corner!
If you're visiting in the morning, make sure to see the Lady Knox Geyser erupt at 10.15 am! The eruption reaches heights of 10 to 20 metres and is followed by a presentation in the natural amphitheatre. Carried out by an expert guide, you'll learn more about the history and mechanics of the Geyser.
Directions to the Lady Knox Geyser are provided after purchasing tickets from the Visitor Centre. It is approximately a 3-minute drive by car from the centre, where there is also plenty of parking.
Finish off your day with a trip to the Mud Pool. A visit to Wai-O-Tapu isn't complete without it! The Mud Pool is located at the site of a large mud volcano that was destroyed by erosion in the 1920's. You'll discover why Rotorua is nicknamed 'Sulphur City' here... the pungent smell is due to dense sulphur deposits from the region's hot bubbling mud pools. You might want to hold your nose!
Throughout your visit, you can relax in the large onsite cafe or enjoy a spot of shopping in the retail centre.
