Coromandel - Things to do

Glistening beaches, mysterious mossy forests, majestic caves and cliffs that rise straight from the ocean: the Coromandel Peninsula is one of the most cherished natural wonders of the North Island for many reasons. This cape is located 150 kilometres east of Auckland and is therefore easily accessible. The Coromandel is famous in New Zealand and abroad for the presence of Cathedral Cove, where limestone rock formations and caves are carved out by the sea over centuries.

The Coromandel Coast attracts all kinds of travellers, thanks to the full range of activities available. Active explorers primarily come here for sea-kayaking, cycling and hiking. One of Coromandel’s most fascinating assets is the Coromandel Coastal Walkway, a 10-kilometre tramp with views of dramatic seascapes on every step of the way. If you’re in good physical shape, try to tackle the hike to The Pinnacles in Coromandel Forest Park. From here, you’ll have amazing views over the green valleys and the rugged peaks that have given this magical place its name.

Just like numerous other parts of New Zealand, the Coromandel Peninsula has a reputation for its hot pools and wellness delights. One of the iconic spots is Hot Water Beach, where you can dig out your own pool and relax in the warm water. More thermal treats await in The Lost Spring in Whitianga where you can dip into mineral-rich spring water and be pampered with spa arrangements.

With an abundance of water all around the Coromandel Peninsula, which means this is ground zero for seafood lovers. Feast on fresh oysters, mussels, or the classic fish and chips in one of the shops in Coromandel Town.

If you want a complete overview of the Coromandel and you lack the time for a multi-day journey, the Coromandel full-day tour from Auckland comes in highly recommended. This tour packs a punch and brings you to the absolute highlights of this popular destination, including Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. Kayaking in Coromandel is another popular activity not be missed.

In case you wish to travel independently, you can opt for the Auckland to Coromandel ferry, which takes you to the dream-like peninsula in just 2 hours.
