WHAT TO EXPECT
In this 2- hour cooking class, you will learn how to cook tempura, a traditional Japanese dish beloved around the world. You will be taught by an experienced chef in a venue that is very close to Lake Kawaguchiko, making it an ideal destination after visiting Mt. Fuji.
They say it is difficult to fry tempura to a crisp at home, but your instructor will help you perfect the art. They will also teach you how to make rice and miso soup to accompany your meal.
The dish you will be preparing is called 'Mt. Fuji Tendon', named after the tallest mountain in Japan. Tendon is a type of Japanese rice bowl topped with fried meat or vegetables. It's a signature menu item of the tempura restaurant "Idaten" close to the Kawaguchiko Station. It consists of six fried prawns, eggplant, green pepper and salmon roe sushi roll piled on top of the rice bowl. You are sure to be satisfied with both the size and taste of this dish.
As you prepare your dish, enjoy stunning views of Lake Kawaguchiko against Mt. Fuji. You will also learn about the history of tempura and the origins of the 'Mt. Fuji Tendon' as you cook. There are several ideas about the origin of the name tendon, but most believe it is derived from Portuguese. Not only will you cook and eat it, but you will also receive an explanation of its background so you can understand the traditional Japanese dish more deeply.
For your class, you will have the option to rent the same Kappogi as the chef wears. Kappogi is a coverall apron with sleeves designed in Japan.
