Australia's Top End is rich in nature, history and culture and there's never been a better time to discover it than now! From Darwin to Katherine and to Kakadu and Litchfield in between, this trip is full of adventure, waterholes, waterfalls and incredible culture.
Immerse yourself in the fascinating history of Western Arhemland, take the iconic Yellow Waters Cruise in Kakadu and soak up the spectacular scenery at Litchfield National Park. This 5-day tour from Darwin is an outback opportunity you can't miss.
Day 1 - Darwin to Kakadu National Park via Litchfield National Park
You'll be collected from your Darwin accommodation at approximately 7.00am and begin the short journey to Litchfield National Park.
Here you'll spend time exploring the waterfalls, streams and the rugged sandstone escarpments dotted throughout the Park. Discover intriguing Cathedral and Magnetic termite mounds and swim, hike and explore Florence and Wangi Falls. Once you've worked up an appetite, take a rest on the banks and enjoy a picnic lunch.
After lunch, leave the highway behind and hit the dirt track along the Marrakai Road. Enjoy the thrill of a real offroad adventure as you join Old Jim Jim Road and head deep into Kakadu National Park. As you travel past billabongs and traverse thrilling water crossings, there's plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting. Kakadu National Park is known for its unique wildlife, so see how many different animals you can spot along the way.
Later, after evening falls head to your private campsite at Cooinda for the night. Tuck into a campfire dinner and enjoy some stargazing with your fellow travellers.
Day 2 - Yellow Waters Cruise, Nourlangie and Ubirr Art sites
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Wake up early for a hearty breakfast this morning, before heading back into Kakadu National Park for the iconic Yellow Waters Cruise. This must do activity within Kakadu National Park. It's an award-winning Aboriginal owned experience that centres around a spectacular billabong system, home to some remarkable and diverse wildlife. You'll spot crocodiles and plenty of other remarkable wildlife.
Later, hit the road to nearby Nourlangie Rock. Home to World Heritage Rock Art, here you'll discover how local Aboriginal people lived in this area through changing times. Changes and stories are reflected in the rock art and in the ground, where archaeologists have uncovered over 20,000 years of Aboriginal occupation!
After lunch, visit the Bowali Visitor Centre and learn about the area through audio-visual presentations. Bowali is a Gun-djeihmi name for the local area and creek on land owned by the Mirarr clan. Make sure you check out the Marrawuddi Gallery which showcases Aboriginal art by artists from within Kakadu and the wider region.
Later this afternoon continue your art discoveries at culturally significant Aboriginal art site Ubirr. Located in the East Alligator region of the Park, you'll be able to observe a wide range of ancient Aboriginal art which will be interpreted by your guide.
Learn the story of the Rainbow Serpent and climb the Nadab Lookout for panoramic views over the floodplain and beyond into Arnhem Land.
After learning about the area, it’s time to pick out a quiet spot to sit and watch the sunset over the Kakadu escarpment.
Once darkness falls, make the short journey to your private campsite for the night.
Day 3 - Arnhem Land
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Today, a once in a lifetime experience awaits as you travel into remote Western Arnhem Land. Here, you'll witness Ancient Aboriginal Art brought to life by your indigenous guide at Injalak Hill.
This is a very special place in Arnhem Land, so take some time to appreciate the rich culture and take in the amazing views.
Later, make your to the Injalak Art Centre where you'll goodbye to your Indigenous guide and say hello to some amazing art on offer.
Tonight return to camp for another hearty meal and talk about the day’s adventures with your guide. Settle around the cosy fire and enjoy the striking NT sky.
Day 4 - Kakadu National Park to Katherine via Gunlom Falls
Today, the pace relaxes as you head into Gunlom Falls. You'll spend a full morning here and enjoy all the spectacular area has to offer.
Relax around the lower plunge pool then work up a sweat with a hike to the top of the falls. You'll be rewarded with an amazing view here which you can enjoy while you can bathing the many rock holes. For the energetic, keep going to the rear fall where you can enjoy a swim under the waterfall.
After a tasty lunch, hop back on the bus and head into the Katherine Region. Stop at Edith Falls for a refreshing dip in the plunge pool along the way, then make your way to the private campsite near Katherine for dinner and a rest.
Day 5 - Katherine Gorge, Indigenous Cultural experience. Return to Darwin
It's up early this morning as you head into Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) before the crowds arrive!
Here you can go on a boat cruise, canoe (optional and own expense) or just take a walk along the sheer rock walls that make this place so spectacular. Spend some time exploring the spiritual home of the Jawoyn Aboriginal people before enjoying a tasty lunch in the natural surrounds.
Afterwards, it's time to immerse yourself in the area's history with the award-winning Top Didj Cultural Experience. Learn about aboriginal culture with Top End Aboriginal artist Manuel Pamkal and discover the significance of his painting style, weapons used and how he lives off the land.
Later on, it’s time to sit back and relax for your journey back to Darwin. Your guide will deliver you at your chosen accommodation. You will arrive back at approximately 5.30pm.
