It takes approximately five hours to get to Milford from Queenstown depending on the time of year and road conditions.

Milford Sound has an abundance of wildlife and is home to New Zealand fur seals and bottlenose dolphins year round. Rare Dusky dolphins are also known to visit the fiord. The world’s rarest penguin, the Fiordland crested penguin, visits Milford during the breeding season (November) and moulting season (March/April). While there is wildlife in Milford Sound, we can’t guarantee sightings as these are wild animals in their natural habitat. A visit to the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory offers more wildlife viewing with an abundance of sea life below the surface.

There are sandflies in Milford Sound. To avoid being bitten, bring mosquito spray with you and wear long sleeve clothing and trousers. Mosquito spray is available for purchase from the Blue Duck Café & Bar in Milford Sound.

There are disabled parking spaces outside the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal building. The only vessel with wheelchair access is Pride of Milford (Milford Sound Scenic Cruise) where access to the vessel is by ramp. There are no wheelchair accessible toilets onboard the vessel, instead these are located in the cruise terminal building.

Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in the world with an average annual rainfall of 7 metres per year. Rainfall can reach 250 millimetres in 24 hours and creates dozens of temporary waterfalls (as well as a number of more permanent ones) that cascade down the cliff faces, some reaching a thousand metres in height, and is why it’s renowned for its spectacular waterfalls and rainforest. The temperature in Milford can vary depending on the season and can go from an average high of 19C in summer (Dec – Feb) to 9C in winter (Jun – Aug). All our vessels have spacious indoor areas with comfortable seating for cruising in all weather conditions.

Due to the changeable nature of the weather in Milford, it’s a good idea to bring a waterproof jacket, warm clothing and wear comfortable shoes. Raincoats are provided for passengers on Encounter Nature Cruises and Discover More Cruises.

  • a. In respect of all passengers, SDL is not liable for any loss, damage or delay caused by or arising from an event beyond the control of SDL, including any act of God, inevitable accident, riot, civil  commotion, strike, lock-out, stoppage or restraint of labour, regardless of the cause and whether partial or general.
  • b. SDL does not warrant that SDL services are available at any particular time or at all. SDL is not liable to a passenger or any other person:
  • (i) for any consequences arising from any variation or delay in the time of arrival or departure from any stop of any vehicle;
  • (ii) for any loss or damage as a result of a cancellation or any variation of the time of arrival or departure from any stop of any vehicle;
  • (iii) for damage to any property of a passenger; or

    Health & Safety
  • Health, safety and comfort is SDL’s primary concern. Prior to every cruise departure, the skipper either shows a safety video or gives clear safety instructions over the public address system. Passengers should listen carefully to these messages and comply with all aspects of safety advice. In the unlikely event of an emergency, passengers must obey all instructions from the SDL fully trained skipper and crew.
  • New Zealand has a ‘no fault’ government-backed medical injury treatment scheme administered by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Under ACC legislation, passengers are prevented from suing the operator for any mishap or misadventure. Should there be a medical incident or injury SDL will do everything in its power to organise prompt medical assistance. In the case of injury the cost of that assistance will be borne by the ACC scheme. The nearest medical centre to Milford Sound is located in Te Anau (120 kilometres away).

    Disabled Passengers
  • The Milford Sound Cruise Terminal, toilets, promenade decks and wharves are all wheelchair accessible.
  • New Zealand Maritime law dictates that all external vessel doors must be water tight and this includes a door sill to prevent seawater entering the vessel. Disabled passengers may need some assistance to negotiate the door sill.
  • All vessels comprise either two or three deck levels accessed by internal and external stairs. Wheelchair accessibility is confined to the main boarding deck only.
  • Toilets on the vessels are not wheelchair accessible.
