This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit a modern-day Aboriginal community in the Tiwi Island. Tiwi locals will provide you with an insight into their rich culture and lifestyle. The tour will reveal scenes seldom seen by many outsiders and will leave you with a lifetime memory. Many cities are blessed with island destinations close by, but only Darwin has the Tiwi Islands.
Your day starts with a 2 hr 30 min ferry journey from Darwin aboard the MV Tiwi Mantawi to Bathurst Island. The modern and comfortable ferry has indoor and outdoor seating, toilets, a kiosk, coffee, and televisions throughout the cabin.
On arrival, join a local guide for a journey through the progressive and modern community of Wurrumiyanga. Visit the Tiwi Museum with its interesting displays of traditional art and depictions of Tiwi Dreamtime stories, and Early Mission Precinct with its unique Tiwi-style Catholic Church.
Spend time with the Tiwi ladies, while they weave and paint. Then, watch as your guide and the ladies perform a smoking ceremony to bless their visitors. They'll also demonstrate totem dances and explain the meaning behind them.
Enjoy a delicious lunch, accompanied by local billy tea and damper, a classic Aussie Outback snack. After lunch, visit the arts and crafts centres to watch the local artists work. You can even purchase some of the artwork, including screen-printed fabric. Then it's time to head back to Darwin on the return ferry journey.
Please note: This tour is on a request basis due to the ferry component. You will be notified within 24 hours if a date change is required.
