Established in 1982, a cruise on the Kuranda Riverboat will leave you relaxed and refreshed. The calm waters of the beautiful upland Barron River in Kuranda provide awesome photo opportunities whilst your skipper provides insight into the history of Kuranda, the ancient tropical rainforest and the animals, reptiles and birds that reside in this unique area of Tropical North Queensland. The Wet Tropics extend along the northeast coast of Queensland for about 450 kilometres between Cooktown in the north and Townsville in the south. It consists of 894,420 hectares of tropical rainforest, open eucalypt forest, swamp and mangrove forest. In some places, it is only a few hundred meters wide and in other places up to 50 to 60 kilometres wide. The river is home to a host of wildlife including freshwater crocodiles (Crocodylus johnsoni or Crocodylus johnstoni), turtles, snakes, water dragons and fish, together with over 100 species of tropical birds. Cassowaries are sometimes seen too on the far side of the river.
You have to option to upgrade the standard riverboat ticket with entry to the Kuranda Koala Gardens, where you can experience Australia’s most popular wildlife — hand feed kangaroos or wallabies, take a photo holding a koala, see wombats, quokkas, lizards, snakes, and freshwater crocodiles, and walk through the nocturnal exhibit where bilbies are housed.
