Frequently Asked Questions

All you need to bring is clothing that you don’t mind getting wet and anything else you might want to deal with the current weather (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, raincoat, fleece, water bottle, snacks, etc.) If you are going out for two or more hours, you should also bring a cell phone that works in New Zealand as an emergency contact.

Everyone needs to start somewhere, and beautiful Lake Wanaka is an excellent place to try kayaking for the first time. If you want to get out and go, the beach rental team will brief you on the basics before setting you free on the lake. Or, if you’d like a little more instruction, you can take a guided tour.

Yes! A little rain is no reason not to go paddling! The Operator only really shuts down operations if the weather becomes too windy for them to safely operate. This generally means winds around 30km/h.

You do not need to be able to swim. The kayaks (both sea kayaks and sit-on-top kayaks) are all quite stable, and the staff will help you find the right boat for your experience level, but there is always a risk that paddlers might fall into the water. The Operator has life jackets that will help you float, and they ask non-swimmers to stay close to the lakefront so they can help if you get into difficulty. Just make sure you let the staff at the beach know!

The Operator tries their hardest to get everybody enjoying the water and has many products to suit all kinds of needs and abilities. Give them a call, and they can chat through the different options they have to suit you.

You can definitely take a camera; it will just be at your own risk. The Operator usually has some dry bags available to help protect small electronics like cameras and cell phones.
