Learn the ancient art of paper mask making at this class with a traditional craftsman who has been making masks for decades.
Find out how these masks are worn for the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam and help to contribute to the preservation of this amazing handicraft. Meet with a local teacher whose family have been making masks for generations, and get a hands-on class where you can make and design your own masks.
Get creative and paint your own mask based on traditional Vietnamese folk characters, and take one home as a souvenir of your trip to the Old Quarter of Hanoi.
You will meet with Mr Hoa who has been making traditional papier mache masks in the Old Quarter of Hanoi for decades. He comes from a long line of distinguished mask makers, although now he is the only craftsman left in this part of Hanoi.
At the class, you will learn all about the historical and cultural significance of these masks, which are traditionally worn by children to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam. The masks are similar to those worn for Halloween in other cultures, and you will get to learn about the different characters from Vietnamese folk tales that are often depicted on the masks.
You will spend time making a mask from scratch using traditional papier mache techniques, which will then need to dry in the sun for several days to harden. This mask will then be painted by Mr Hoa and sold from his shop, so a Vietnamese child will buy the mask that you create. A perfect way to contribute to the preservation of this ancient art!
As you make the masks, you will also get to use moulds that have been in Mr Hoa’s family for generations, and Mr Hoa will be with you every step of the way to guide you through the process of completing this traditional handicraft. Don’t worry if you are not naturally artistic, as many of the elements of the class will be set up for you to make sure that you make a success of your creation.
When it comes to your own designs, you will paint and decorate a pre-made mask that has already dried and hardened, and will be able to take this home with you at the end of the class as a memento of your session here in the Old Quarter of Hanoi.
For anyone looking to unleash their inner artist as well as support this ancient handicraft, this workshop offers a unique and magical experience.
