Vietnamese food is gaining prominence around the world, but although Banh Mi and Pho may be recognised names, people rarely know much about the kinds of deserts on offer in Vietnam. As such, this cooking class is perfect if you are a foodie looking to expand your repertoire, or if you just have a sweet tooth that you want to indulge during your trip.
You will start the class by meeting with Ms Oanh and her daughter at their traditional house in a neighbourhood in Hanoi. Ms Oanh is famous is the area for her deserts, and she owns her own business delivering to local shops, offices, and schools, so you know that her deserts must taste pretty good! Once you have met with Ms Oanh, she will teach you how to make a plethora of tasty treats that are firm favourites with locals such as ‘cake that floats in water’ which is actually a sticky rice dish that is made to resemble birds’ eggs. As you make these traditional deserts you will also get a master class on how to use Vietnamese ingredients, and you will learn about foodstuffs that you may never have worked with before such as green bean paste and black sesame paste.
Other items on the menu will be Rice Balls Sweet Soup, a kind of sweet liquid like a soup into which glutinous rice balls are dropped and mixed with grated root ginger. Don’t worry if you are not much of a culinary genius, as Ms Oanh is known for being an excellent teacher, and will patiently guide you through all the steps until you master these classic dishes.
You will also get the chance to be as hands-on as you like throughout the entire process, and this includes being involved every step of the way, including dry frying to sesame seeds and cooking down the green beans the make the paste. At the end of the class you will be presented with a step-by-step written guide to help you remember how to make these deserts yourself.
