For anyone who wants to plunge head first into Vietnamese culture, this is the tour for you. Often visitors to the region find the culture of Vietnam difficult to grasp, and with that in mind there is no better way to get to grips with the eclectic mix of influences here than through this fascinating series of workshops.
Learn basic Vietnamese language and Chinese characters as you take a calligraphy class with a well known scholar. Take a trip back to the past with a papier mache mask-making workshop and learn all about this dying art. Finally, finish the tour with a relaxing Vietnamese tai chi class in a traditional local temple.
If you want to know more about the arts, music, and language of Vietnam, then this series of classes will give you a glimpse into some of the best love cultural aspects of this country.
The tour will start when you meet with a friendly local guide who will take you to learn all about the Chinese influence in Vietnam. Before Latin spelling was used in Vietnam, Chinese characters were used as a way to communicate, and you will learn some of the basic characters and practice writing them using an ancient form of calligraphy.
After the calligraphy class you will then dive into the backstreets of the Old Quarter of Hanoi were you will meet with one of the lone surviving craftsmen of papier mache masks in the city. Once loved by Vietnamese children, mask-making is a dying art, but you can still learn how to make and paint your own mask at this workshop.
The tour will end on a relaxing note as you move on to a traditional temple that has stood in Hanoi for centuries. Here you will learn the ancient art of Vinh Xuan Quyen, a form of Vietnamese tai chi that focuses on the philosophy of movement.
During this tour you will also get to experience some of the culinary delights of Vietnam, with a traditional light lunch of rice cakes and a sumptuous black bean desert. In the evening, you will also stop for dinner, where you will dine on traditional Vietnamese noodle soup known as Pho, one of the most famous and delicious dishes in the whole of Vietnam.
This tour is perfect for anyone who wants to scratch below the surface of this complex city and learn how modern day Hanoi came to be, as well as trying your hand at some of the most famous ancient traditions that were born here.
