Fraser Island Activities and Tours

Things To Do On Fraser (K'gari) Island

Discover the only place on earth where tall rainforests grow on sand dunes at elevations of more than 200m (656ft), with a Fraser Island tour.

Also home to half the world's perched lakes (lakes formed when depressions in dunes fill permanently with rainwater), K’Gari truly is a natural wonder that has to be seen, to be believed.

Located about 9 hours from Brisbane (including transfers from the mainland out to the island), the journey is well worth it, as within minutes of landing on K’gari you’ll feel its magic.

Stretching over 123km in length and 22km at its widest point, Fraser has an area of 184, 000 hectares making it the largest sand island in the world.

Fraser Island's World Heritage listing ranks it with Australia's Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef, and is undeniably a precious part of Australia's natural and cultural heritage, hence why it is protected for all to appreciate and enjoy.

K'gari - meaning ‘of paradise’ in Butchulla language, is essentially the same size as Singapore, and features crystal-clear swimming lakes, 4WD tracks, dingoes that run wild and is also quite possibly the best spot to see baby humpback whales migrating.

Starting in August, this half-day whale watching encounter allows you to tour to Fraser Island from Hervey Bay, while coming face-to-face with Hervey Bay’s local whales. Enjoy a tranquil cruise through the Great Sandy Strait, along the remote pristine western side of Fraser Island to Australia’s ultimate humpback whale playground.

Standing on the specially designed viewing platform on the boat, you'll be taken right to the water’s edge. You'll also be able to delve beneath the surface and check out the whales from the underwater viewing rooms where you can see the whales in their natural environment and watch them swim and play.

Equipped with a hydrophone, you’ll also be able to hear the whales sing onboard!

Back on land, when it comes to road trips, you can’t beat the exhilaration that comes with driving down a white-sand beach next to wild blue waves and on K’gari, that’s what it’s all about! Bid farewell to traffic lights and say hello to off-road adventures on one of our Fraser Island day tours.

Departing Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, this K’Gari day tour is the ultimate 4WD off-roading adventure. Offering a fun and immersive experience for all travel types, this all-inclusive tour is the perfect way to explore the sights and sounds of Fraser Island in one day!

Equipped with an expert with local knowledge and a passion for the island, you'll drive across sand tracks to explore some of the most beautiful, natural spots and listen to fascinating facts about the island's history, fauna and flora aboard a custom-designed 4WD bus that is air conditioned for your comfort and fitted with panoramic windows.

You’ll see the island’s iconic sights on a curated itinerary of highlights. Stop at Central Station, a former logging station that housed schools and shops for the bustling timber industry and is now a tourist stop. Then, stroll along the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk to discover the ancient king ferns, towering ghost gums and pine trees.

See the breathtakingly beautiful Lake McKenzie, and enjoy a revitalising swim in the crystal clear blue waters or relax on the sandy white beaches – it’s picture-perfect!

Drive along the golden sand highway, known as 75 Mile Beach and keep an eye out as you may spot birds of prey flying above or humpback whales as they migrate past (between July to November).

Finally, see The Pinnacles coloured sand and learn how these radiant formations were created and the Butchulla Dreamtime story surrounding them. It really is the biggest and best day out on Fraser Island…and for a good reason!
