Why do we love this
This tour combines nature and excitement for an epic day in New Zealand. You get to check out the most active volcano in the country and actually get close to the inner crater and all the volcanic action, which we think is pretty cool! We love the guided crater tour and the added bonus of dolphin and whale sightings.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Get ready for an epic journey to New Zealand's only active marine volcano, White Island! Hop aboard your luxury vessel for a 6-hour adventure full of volcanic action and stunning views.
White Island sits just 49km off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island and is one of the world’s most accessible live volcanos. With the majority of the volcano sitting beneath the sea, you're able to disembark directly into the crater complex – no mountain climbing required!
Since it's a live volcano, you can expect geothermal activity galore. Get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams and the amazing lake of steaming acid. You'll never have seen anything like this before!
Explore the inner crater with experienced guides on a 1 - 1.5-hour tour and learn about the area with fascinating commentary on the geology of the island. You'll also hear stories of attempts to mine sulphur. Along with incredible volcanic and geothermal features, you'll also see the remains of the sulphur factory. This structure has survived multiple eruptions since being abandoned in the 1930s.
Later, head back aboard the boat and enjoy a light lunch and stunning views of the outer walls of the island. Here you'll be able to see where the Pohutukawa forests grow and observe the thousands of Australasian Gannet colonies.
On your journey home, there's often the chance to spot dolphins, whales and other marine life, so keep your eyes peeled! The tour comes complete with the necessary government permits to interact with these animals so it’s a great way to end an already amazing day.
