Looking to tap into your creativity and make a beautiful Cambodian souvenir to bring home and have others admire for years and years to come? Look no further than this copper bracelet making class! Led by Mr. Kheoun who was trained by the wonderful Mrs. Chan, this course is fun and exciting. The Cambodian copper art form reached its height during the 11th century when it was most used by the royal families. It is truly fascinating that this century old tradition is continued today by a handful of Khmer families.
Few commodities are more embraced and loved by the Cambodian culture like copper is. Copper is an excellent conductor of energy, and is often found in electrical wiring. Thus, copper is said to enhance and transmit thoughts, even over long distances. Copper is also thought to have healing powers, and people often wear it on their wrists for such reasons.
In this course, you’ll learn more about the craftsmanship that goes into making copper jewelry and the highly intricate designs that go into each piece. Khmer copper craft has had a long history with its people, whose value is just as appreciated! In this exclusive course offered by Backstreet Academy, you will get a rare opportunity to create your own timeless piece as you learn to carve your own custom copper bracelet starting from just a flat piece of metal.
In this three hour class, you will learn how to turn a flat piece of copper into a beautiful piece of jewelry. You’ll have the creative freedom to create your own pattern and design that you want on the bracelet. You can even find something beforehand that you’d like to try and replicate -- bring in a photo and your instructor will happily show you how to best recreate it! Once you have your design, you will learn to sketch it out and then carve the design onto the flat piece of copper.
Next, your teacher will show you how to chisel, cut, hammer, shine and wash the metal! With the finishing touches done to your bracelet, you will gain a new appreciation for all of the labor that goes into the jewelry you see at markets along the streets of Siem Reap.
Participants of this class can also choose to make a combination bracelet made of both copper and silver, at an additional cost.
