So you want to learn a bunch of different skills and you can’t decide on just one class? Well, this 8 hour long workshop is just the place for you! You’ll learn a variety of skills and each session will give you the opportunity to get hands-on and make something truly unique to bring back home with you. Ratana Savouth, a master in the art of handmade pottery, will kick off the day and teach you the skills necessary to make anything you’d like! Ratana is a student at the Fine Arts in Phnom Penh City and she will happily help you learn the ways of pottery making. Fancy a vase, a pot, or even a mug -- whatever you’re looking to make, you can do it with Savouth’s help. Participants are even encouraged to bring in photos of something they’d like to replicate. You’ll be guided on how to use the necessary tools to carve your pottery, and then you’ll learn how to add in intricate details afterward.
The next leg of this maker’s marathon will give you a sense of how the ancient craft of coconut carving works. Sok Chea, an extremely talented carver, will guide you through the steps so that you can make a piece that you are proud of. Beginners are encouraged to carve keychains, but you’re more than welcome to venture out into making cutlery, or any other kind of decorative piece you may like to try. As with the pottery portion, you’re welcome to bring in a photo of what you’d like to make, and Sok Chea will help you along the way!
Now that you’re an expert coconut carver, you’ll head to your final class for the day -- candle carving! Candle carving is one of the most difficult Cambodian art forms and involves very skilled hands to make a beautiful piece. Only a handful of people in Cambodia still actually practice candle carving - so you’ll be lucky to learn from one of the few! You’ll learn how to turn a slab of wax into a beautifully, intricate design that you’ll want to show off to everyone you know.
By the end of these 8 hours, you’ll feel energized as you’ve tapped into much of the creative brain that you may not have even known you had. Plus, you’ll have all of your DIY souvenirs as proof to bring home and show others! This workshop is a lovely way to dive into the Cambodian culture and have a wonderful time in the process.
