WHAT TO EXPECT
Adventurous eaters rejoice, for this is the perfect local Cambodian activity for you! Gear yourself up for the Phnom Penh Fear Factor challenge! While a “fear” for outsiders, the foods you’ll be taste-testing here are actually everyday, delicious fare for the locals in Cambodia. Deep fried with spices, garlic, herbs and garnished with lime, among other ingredients, these crickets, beetles and worms are just everyday snacks that Cambodians love to have among friends with a cold beer.
Prech Vanneth, who sells his mountains of insects at the riverside, runs this workshop and enjoys teaching tourists about local Cambodian cuisine. He especially gets a kick out of seeing folks try these foods for the first time! The faces and reactions he has witnessed are priceless! After living in Korea for a bit, Vanneth ultimately decided to return to Cambodia and make a living for his family by frying up insects. While it may look scary to outsiders, there’s really nothing to fear here! Vanneth makes participants feel welcomed and even excited to have a taste! If you’re culinarily adventurous at all and love to have a good story to tell your friends and family back home, this is an absolute must while in Cambodia.
You’ll be welcomed with opened arms by Prech Vanneth, who will hope that you are ready with an open mind (and an open mouth!) to try out the insects he prepares for you in this workshop. In this course, you’ll learn how to cook and prepare insects in a way that tastes so great, you’ll forget that you’re eating bugs at all! You’ll also learn more about the Cambodian culture, lifestyle and overall history so that you have more of a background before you dive into the highlight of the day -- the taste testing!
You’ll be able to choose the insects that you want to devour; from juicy water beetles, springy crickets and crispy grasshoppers, to melt-in-your-mouth worms and mini frogs! Be brave, complete the challenge and you’ll be able to tell people that you not only have eaten these crazy creatures, but that you have also prepared, marinated and cooked them yourself! If you’re up for the baby egg, simply let us know and we’ll hatch one for you. Don’t know what that means? You’ll have to book this class to find out!
You’ll also learn more about how the practice of eating insects came about in the first place (hint: starvation can make nearly anything look appetizing!). What was once a necessity just to survive, is now a popular local fare -- take the leap and face your foodie fears today!
